It’s all about Linksys RE6500

What is range extender?

The extender is a device similar to a router and used to expand the range of the LAN (Local Area Network). It is obvious that the speed that a client gets from the range extender is less than the speed that he can get from the base station directly. But the main advantage of having extender is you can access the Internet from the dead spots. It takes the signal from the router and retransmits it to the wireless device. The best position to place an extender is midway between the router and the dead spot.

Installing the Linksys RE6500

Follow the steps given below to install the extender at your home:

Note: If you have any installed extender before, then switch it off first.

  1. Unpack your extender box. Take out all the things comes with the extender. Firstly, place the antennas in the upright position to get the best result. Plug the extender in the power outlet.
  2. Place the extender midway between the router or cable modem and dead spot. Now switch on the extender. Make sure there is at least 50% of the Wi-Fi signal of the router.
  3. Wait for about two minutes and ensure that the extender is switched on by looking at the Power LED. It gets a solid light. Connect to the Linksys Extender Setup (a Wi-Fi network). In Windows 7 and 8, you will get a prompt asking “Do you want to set up your network”. You have to click on Connect to the network without setting it up.
  4. The setup process starts automatically. If it does not then launch a web browser and type in the address bar of the browser and press enter. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup process.

after waiting a long time on hold a tech support guy came on and we did a few tests to see why my computer did not connect to the extender. I was told he needed to take remote control and see what the problem was. After a quick look he said my computer was corrupted and needed to be fixed. After talking to his supervisior he said he could fix it for a fee of $110. I asked why I couldn't take it to a repair shop and was assured that wouldnt help. Funny I was connected to a modem while I was talking to him. When I said I needed to think, he hung up. Go figure. A different tech helped me connect and everything is working now. Just be aware that there are people like this everywhere even though the second tech swore they never charge for service.
