No the appliances can not create problems to the power line products, however problem can be through the primary modem or the router.
Yes, sometimes few things will affect the performance of it like metallic objects placed near it or connecting it to surge protectors or UPS and these devices filter out some high frequency signals used in Power line communications. Connecting a Power line to one of these devices can greatly reduce the data rate of transfers, or block communications entirely.
