Thanks for sharing your concern with us , it is not mandatory to register your router but if you will register it with netgear server it will automatically get updates and there are some more services which needs activation.

While configuring your device you get a screen where you can register with the OEM so that they can send you critical updates regarding the product.
Its not necessary to register your account in order to make router work , however if you register the account you will receive updates.
