Yes ,Dd-wrt firmware update is compatible with Netgear R6250. To unleash your router by updating firmware you can follow these steps:
1. There are several open source firmware available for your router but i will recommend to go
with DD-wrt open source firmware.
2. Open any browser on your computer and open this link https://www.dd-wrt.com/site/.
3. Go to router database ,type the model number of your router in search box.
4. Now you will find the open source firmware for your router.
5. Download the file on your computer.
6. Now after doing this just unplug all cables from your router except power cable.
7. Grab a paper clip and reset your router by holding reset button for atleast 20-30 seconds.
8. After reset just connect a ethernet cable from your router to computer.
9. check the default gateway and open the same on any browser.
10.It will open the setup wizard so follow the onscreen instructions carefully.
11.After setup open router main page and go to connectivity Tab and manually upload the
downloaded file(open source firmware file) from there .
12. It might take few minutes in order to update the firmware for your router.
13. After reboot you will see a new user interface as well as lots of feature for your router .

Now you need to hard reset your router by holding the clip in reset hole for 30 seconds.
Now connect the router to computer with Ethernet cable .

Now go to connectivity tab and upload the downloaded firmware of your router.
It will take some time to upload it and once done your router reboots itself and you will see the new interface for your router
